204. SPOTLIGHT ON: Ceremonial Sidearm (Dothroi Radiant Guard)

A badge of office and apparent ranged weapon provided to all members of the Radiant Guard, who defend the Dothroi people’s ruling coven. The sidearm resembles a pistol in form, with a counterbalanced grip and trigger configuration allowing the weapon to be wielded in a single humanoid hand. It has a long, thin barrel and is inlaid with auricium finery throughout, framing fields of teal and violet colouration - the traditional livery of the Radiant Guard.

While the sidearm’s form is indeed captivating, its function makes it truly remarkable. For cultural context, while the factions of the Dothroi and their stellar neighbours have always been prone to outbreaks of conflict, the ruling coven of the Dothor system insists on maintaining true pacifist neutrality, earning respect through their impartial judgement. In line with this ethos, the Radiant Guards’ "sidearms" are incapable of firing a single shot; rather, when the trigger is pulled, a high-intensity electric shock is administered to the wielder via the weapon’s grip. Such a charge is typically more than enough to end the life of a sentient being.

The first generations of Dothroi to be recruited into the Radiant Guard were not warned about the true nature of the weapons with which they were provided; the rigged pistols were considered a test to see who would learn to adhere to the coven’s principles of nonviolence. Nowadays most guards know this secret but still carry the sidearms as a formality - and as a way to deter would-be thieves and looters.
