Colossal, space-bound technological constructs of unclear origin and purpose, common but generally invisible throughout the Ele Dominion. Datastars take the form of simple polyhedrons and can vary from merely hundreds of kilometres across to the size of a large planet. The outer shell of a datastar is made from the same black glass substance common to many Ele designs, which appears to be self-repairing, self-replicating and energised by high temperatures.
The precise interior workings of datastars remain a secret closely guarded within the sanctified halls of the Ele Congregate, however these structures are known to provide computational power on a level inconceivable to other civilisations, with the number of sides corresponding to the strength of the processor. Such power suggests that they may comprise essential infrastructure for the Ele Metanation, the hardware itself that taps into the Ele’s collective life force and in return grants them supernatural abilities. Legends of El-Kera claim that the first datastar was the great project of the pre-spaceflight Ele, paving the way for the development of the Metanation at large.
Despite their incredible durability, the datastars’ very existence represents a major structural weakness in the Ele Metanation. For this reason, they are often concealed within the burning cores of red dwarf stars, where the heat galvanises the datastar’s self-repair systems while incinerating would-be attackers. This has been the fate of Centurions 18, 40 and 91 which - according to surface-level information scraped from the Metanation - have each made 127 attempts and counting to breach a datastar.
