168. SPOTLIGHT ON: CCS Fortitude

A patrol frigate of the Coreworlds Conglomerate’s interstellar navy, assigned to the border between Conglomerate territory and the Empire of the Queil. The Fortitude replaced the short-lived CCS Diligence, a standard-stock Veldt Star Industries starship from among its first FTL-capable military models. When the Diligence proved incapable of weathering the Illal Strait’s highly dense asteroid fields, Veldt promised improved durability, shielding and propulsion in its successor.

Taking inspiration from water-bound icebreaker ships, the Fortitude’s prow incorporates an extra layer of heavy-duty armour plating and a higher concentration of shield projector nodes to ensure that a frontal impact is no longer crippling. While the vessel’s outer plating has been substituted for a heavier alloy, its hull structure has also been reinforced to prevent distortion.

Unlike conventional magnetic shielding which repulses nearby objects, the Fortitude boasts a patented nullifier field, which has since become a popular commercial upgrade. This field kills the inertia of any approaching object, dispersing its kinetic energy throughout the projected area and leaving would-be projectiles motionless.

Since dubbed the Illal-class, the model for which the Fortitude was the prototype has become a favourite of mining companies and exploration teams throughout the Conglomerate’s territory. Meanwhile, the Fortitude itself deployed under the command of Captain Denne Siloah amidst a time of rising tensions on the Queil border. Though the crew could not have anticipated the role they and their vessel would soon play in galactic politics, all aboard the Fortitude were given combat training in case the worst should happen.
