127. SPOTLIGHT ON: The Rhyzomic Expanse

A gigantic, complex network of organic roots and branches located within Ele space, approximately equidistant between El-Kera and the border of the Dominion. The Rhyzomic Expanse is parsecs across and continues to grow in the vacuum. Though the phenomenon is believed to originate from a single source, it now encompasses much of the local territory and presents a significant navigational hazard to anyone traversing the depths of Ele space.

No historical records exist that detail the origins of the Rhyzomic Expanse, but legends tell of an indestructible “source seed” which survived the collapse of a solar system, drawing nourishment from the resulting debris and background radiation. Over millennia, the seed flourished into a sprawling rhizome, seemingly unimpeded by obstacles that would stymy normal growth. The Rhyzomic Expanse has so far incorporated everything from wayward starships to even stars and planets, each formerly freestanding world now cradled within the gargantuan branches.

The practically impervious nature of the branches’ outer skin has made detailed studies of the Rhyzomic Expanse impossible (and may also account for its survival, in part). Biologists note that trace Korelum metal is woven into the organic material, and that the Expanse apparently generates its own atmosphere which is surprisingly hospitable to sentients. Indeed, small Ele communities have been established among the larger branches.

Much about the Rhyzomic Expanse is still unknown. Notably, its web-like structure, continual expansion and incorporation of its surrounds physically mirror attributes of the Ele Metanation. Is this meaningful, or merely coincidence? I cannot say.
