Diary of Endelle Stroth - 30.06.2270
Just received word a Centurion has been captured, and is being brought to El-Kera for analysis. I don’t know what it took to subdue the probe, but I suspect containment will be temporary at best. Still, I must admit a little excitement at the chance to examine up close something to which my fortunes have been so closely bound, and to finally begin puzzling out the mystery of the Centurions’ aggressions.
The Project Centennial software is archaic - already a century old when it was rediscovered, but also designed to be able to survive a century. We weren’t able to reverse engineer much of the Centurions’ programming from what we found on the control terminal, but we know the basic directives would necessarily be simple, to avoid accelerated entropy or corruption. Thus: explore and survive.
Unsurprisingly, the Project’s original creators equipped the Centurions with weapons and heavy armour to aid their survival, but despite what the Trifold Union or the popular press might want to suggest, I truly believe those Centurions only attacked the Queil in those outposts because they were being directly threatened. If someone pointed a gun at you, wouldn’t you do everything in your power to stop them firing?
By all accounts, that’s not what’s happening in the Dominion. It appears the Centurions are seeking out settlements in their path to assault. But why? What are they responding to? Is there some intangible, unmeasurable…
Oh no. Oh no, no, no. I think I understand now. I have to…
