An entity central to Ele civilisation which seemingly embodies a combined political state, shared consciousness, living organism and supernatural force. The Ele Metanation - also known as the Ele - is difficult to quantify, and its intangibility makes scientific analysis almost impossible, although its effects are observed in the Ele Dominion and its people.
According to Ele representatives, the Metanation essentially comprises its member citizens, their minds and spiritual essences, and the geographical area between them. In this way, the Metanation mutates depending on the location and status of individual Ele, which explains (somewhat) the vast size of the Ele Dominion’s political territory.
Per the Ele, membership of the Metanation confers remarkable abilities, ranging from shared sustenance and telepathic communication to near-instant travel within the Dominion. In return, the Metanation “consumes” a minute fraction of each member’s potential energy - Where does this go? How does it manifest? Is the Ele Metanation a… creature? This is unclear and likely unknowable.
Complicating this concept further is the apparent fact that outsiders who physically enter the Metanation become part of the Ele, receiving the benefits above in return for the same fraction of their potential energy and, alarmingly, their sense of individuality. This joining is involuntary and irreversible, and means that much of the Ele Metanation is now made up of migrants from other civilisations. That the Ele are so politically reclusive may suggest awareness that this subsumption is considered morally questionable by foreigners.
