018. SPOTLIGHT ON: 'Living Wall' Orchid

A highly unusual type of plant found on the twin planets of Veden and Vodan, the only life-sustaining worlds in the Vire system. Though the 'Living Wall' sports a number of bright magenta blooms throughout the summer months, these flowers’ beauty is eclipsed by the remarkable properties of the plant’s 'stem' (or perhaps trunk' would be more appropriate in this context).

While most flowering plants of this type tend to be delicate and grow low to the ground, the 'Living Wall' can grow to be several storeys tall, and exhibits a broad central stem between two and three metres across. Experiments conducted by Centurion 23 found that the green flesh of the plant’s stem was impervious to blades, bullets and energy weapons; this appraisal was considered anomalous until it was verified by botanists from the University of Aglostarros.

The plant’s resilience is attributed to its uniquely dense and interlocking cell structure, and undoubtedly accounts for the dominating presence of 'Living Wall' orchids on Veden and Vodan. Further research funded by the Coreworlds Conglomerate and a consortium of paramilitary organisations speculates that, if harvested or synthesised in an efficient way, the flesh of the 'Living Wall' could provide a major upgrade to protective armour for both frontline soldiers and law enforcement throughout the Conglomerate.

Several neighbouring galactic civilisations have established presences in the Vire system to analyse the possible military applications of the 'Living Wall'. However, the impermeable nature of the plant has so far made it difficult to manipulate.
