013. SPOTLIGHT ON: Tyriss

A habitable planet and the only celestial body orbiting the star Goh III, located on the Medial Ring. Tyriss’ relative proximity to Goh III gives it a tropical climate, with turbulent polar oceans and dramatic storms in place of ice caps and true winters.

Three moons orbit elliptically around Tyriss, named (from largest to smallest) Tyr, Dirit and Urse. Approximately once a year, Dirit and Urse pass close enough to each other that small particles of rock and dust break off from each moon, forming a beautiful but harmless meteorite shower in the skies of Tyriss.

The ecology of Tyriss is mostly fungal in nature, with many of the planet’s major landmasses occupied by forests of brightly coloured, branching mycelia. Airborne spores gather in fog-like clouds around these jungles, giving them a strangely dream-like quality.

Paleontological scans conducted by Centurion 54 suggest that Tyriss had a much more diverse biome in its (relatively) recent past. Surveys indicate that large mammalian beings populated much of the planet’s southern hemisphere approximately five centuries ago, but that most were hunted to extinction when a crashed starship from a neighbouring civilisation, the Iniir, introduced the predatory aradog species.

Today, packs of aradogs are common throughout Tyriss, hunting and feeding on the last of the planet’s fauna as well as each other. Small enclaves of Iniir, descended from the crash survivors, can also be found across the planet, though they are generally insular and reclusive.

Tyriss was recently shortlisted for resort world status.
